KSU Edges Mizzou in Extra Innings

COLUMBIA, Mo. - - Steve Gray homered, doubled and drove in two runs and Rick Zagone allowed just two runs in seven innings pitched, but a run in the top of the 10th by Kansas State, gave KSU a 4-3 win over Mizzou in the finale of a three-game series at Taylor Stadium. In the top of the 10th inning, the Wildcats' Adam Muenster reached on an infield single and advanced to second on an errant throw to first. Pinch hitter Byron Wiley followed by taking an intentional walk. Then, with Carter Jurica at the plate, freshman Nick Tepesch threw a wild pitch. Sophomore catcher Trevor Coleman attempted to throw Wiley out as he tried to take second base, but the throw was off line, going into centerfield. Muenster, who was attempting to take third on the wild pitch, scored the go-ahead run on the error. The Tigers fall to 31-16 on the year and 11-10 in the Big 12, while Kansas State moves to 22-25 overall and 7-14 in league play. Zagone took a no decision after pitching seven innings, in which he allowed two runs on five hits. KSU's Jason King singled to drive in Jurica in the first inning for the game's first run. Jurica was 3-for-6 on the day and scored three of Kansas State's four runs. The Tigers tied score with a run in the second inning, as freshman Andrew Thigpen scored from third on a groundout to second by sophomore Greg Folgia. The Wildcats quickly regained the lead as Jurica scored for the second time in the game in the third inning. Gray led off the bottom of the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season to tie the game at two. The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when Mizzou took its first lead of the day. Sophomore Aaron Senne led off the eighth with a single and scored when Gray doubled. Gray finished the day 2-for-4, driving in two of the Tigers' three runs. Kansas State forced extra inning when Jurica scored his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Justin Bloxom in the ninth inning. The Wildcats then scored the run in the top of the 10th and MU was retired 1-2-3 in its half of the 10th. Missouri will host a pair of midweek games this week at Taylor Stadium, taking on Creighton at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Missouri State at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
