Mizzou Moves To No. 20 In U.S. Sports Academy Directors Cup Standings

March 27, 2008

Cleveland, Ohio - The collective success revolving around Mizzou athletics is reaching unprecedented heights. Head Coach Gary Pinkel's football program moved to No. 1 in the Bowl Championship Series standings late in the 2007 season and Tim Jamison's baseball team is currently ranked as high as No. 2 in the national polls. With those two programs pacing a well-rounded athletics effort, Missouri moved to No. 20 in the latest U.S. Sports Academy's Directors' Cup standings (formerly known as the Sears Directors' Cup) released Thursday afternoon by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

No. 20 Missouri (319.50 points) trails only No. 7 Texas (471.00) among Big 12 schools in the standings and is ranked just ahead of No. 21 Duke (319.00) and No. 22 Notre Dame (315.50). The next Big 12 program on the list is No. 24 Nebraska with 311.50 points.

Mizzou has had eight programs ranked in the Top 25 of their respective sports this year, including its No. 18 gymnastics program, which heads to the Big 12 Championships this weekend in Norman, Okla. Head Coach Brian Smith's wrestling squad recently completed its season with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Championships last weekend in St. Louis. Other highlights for Mizzou include the volleyball team qualifying for its eighth consecutive berth to the NCAA Championships, the soccer team reaching a fifth-place national ranking and a pair of nationally-ranked swimming and diving programs.

The current rankings are through the first set of winter sport rankings. The next NCAA Division I winter release will be published on April 10 and will include men's swimming and men's and women's basketball.

The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program's sponsor. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 women's and 10 men's.

Please note, standings published midseason are unofficial. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season. Complete standings and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA's Web site at www.nacda.com.
